Sustainable Financing in Iraq Between Reality and the Central Bank’s Roadmap 2023-2029

Abstract

financing is one of the main tools for achieving sustainable development that balances economic, social, and environmental dimensions. However, Iraqi banks still face major challenges in this area. Therefore, this research aims to study the current reality of sustainable financing in Iraqi banks and analyze the challenges facing its application. The research is based on the hypothesis that the Central Bank can play an important role in supporting the development, growth, and financial stability of Iraqi banks, while ensuring that their environmental, social, and governance performance is consistent with international standards through the Sustainable Financing Map 2023-2029. The research reached a set of conclusions, including that Iraqi banks suffer from a lack of awareness of the concept of sustainable financing, in addition to the weakness of the legislative structure and regulatory framework that supports this type of financing.
