The role of telemedicine strategy in enhancing the sustainability of health services in Najaf Governorate

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of the telemedicine strategy in enhancing the sustainability of health services in Najaf Governorate, through an applied study conducted at Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf Teaching Hospital, in light of the growing challenges facing the healthcare sector, particularly limited resources, increasing demand for medical services, and the rapid pace of digital transformation in healthcare institutions. The study adopts a descriptive–analytical approach, with the applied aspect relying on official data and reports issued by Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf Teaching Hospital, including indicators related to the use of telemedicine technologies, the efficiency of healthcare service delivery, continuity, and quality. The study seeks to measure the contribution of the telemedicine strategy to improving access to healthcare services, reducing pressure on hospital infrastructure, rationalizing operational costs, and supporting the environmental and social sustainability of health services. The results indicate that the adoption of telemedicine applications has significantly contributed to enhancing healthcare performance efficiency, improving the continuity of service delivery, and increasing patient satisfaction, in addition to supporting sustainable healthcare trends within the governorate. The study concludes that the telemedicine strategy represents an effective tool for enhancing the sustainability of health services in hospitals in Najaf Governorate. It also emphasizes the importance of providing supportive digital infrastructure, developing medical staff capabilities, and establishing clear regulatory and legislative frameworks to ensure the successful implementation of this strategy. The study further offers several recommendations aimed at supporting the wider adoption of telemedicine in Iraqi healthcare institutions, thereby contributing to the achievement of sustainable health development.
